ScorecardMichael Powell registered his third Championship century of the summer to put promotion-chasing Glamorgan on course for a substantial total against Yorkshire after winning the toss on a good strip at Colwyn Bay. Only Powell (146) and Jimmy Maher (53) passed fifty, but the remainder of the Glamorgan top order made contributions with the exception of Adrian Dale and Robert Croft who both got ducks.Incredibly, this was the only county match to satisfy those looking to watch a game on a public holiday. County treasurers across the land should be asking for explanations from those responsible for compiling the fixture list.Maher (53) and Mark Wallace (31), Glamorgan’s sixth opening pair of the summer, got them off to a brisk start, with Steve Kirby, mentioned by some as a possible England opening bowler, taking particular punishment. They had put on 82 in 14 overs when the eratic Kirby struck, trapping Wallace leg-before, and in the next over Dale became the first of Chris Silverwood’s four victims (85 for 2).Maher brought up his 68-ball fifty with his tenth rasping boundary before he drove loosely at Siverwood and edged to Stephen Fleming at first slip (102 for 3).Powell then added 60 with Maynard for the fourth wicket either side of lunch, a stand broken when Maynard snicked an attempted cut off Silverwood to the wicketkeeper, Richard Blakey (162 for 4). The biggest stand of the innings then came as Powell put on 118 with David Hemp (25), a partnership dominated by Powell. He brought up his fifty from 107 balls and then raced to his hundred in another 41.Hemp finally opened up, hitting Richard Dawson for successive fours and then cover driving the increasingly frustrated Kirby. Kirby had the last laugh soon after when Hemp lost his off stump shouldering arms to one that cut back (280 for 5.)Croft came and went, and Powell was within sight of his 150 when he tried to loft occasional spinner Yuvraj Singh back over his head and holed out to Silverwood at long off.If Yorkshire thought they had broken the back of the innings they were wrong as Alex Wharf and Michael Kasprowicz smashed 48 runs in five overs before bad light ended play with nine overs remaining.Yesterday’s County Championship round-up
